-Over the last few years there’s been a huge rise in the popularity of Small Group Personal Training (SGPT).
We’re proud to be the first gym to bring this to the North Shropshire/South Cheshire area, and have been mastering the craft for the past 3 and a 1/2 years, with many gyms now trying to replicate our blueprint.
But there’s still lots of confusion in regard to what it is and how it works.
So, let’s get right to it;
What is Small Group Personal Training?
In essence, it’s as simple as it sounds – personal training delivered in a small group. There’s debate about what constitutes ‘small’ but for us, 4 clients is the sweet spot.
We like to be clear here – Small Group Personal Training is not a ‘fitness class’.
For us, a class is a larger group session where pretty much everyone is doing the same exercises regardless of their ability or personal goals.
Which is fine under certain circumstances, but it is not what our SGPT is all about.
Our SGPT is made to be able to treat each person as an individual, and tailor the session accordingly.
We work with clients of all shapes, sizes, fitness levels, ages and goals and there may be a variety of these in one session.
A big concern many clients have before starting any form of group fitness is that they might not be at the same level of fitness as other people in the group, and often they ‘don’t want to hold anyone back’.
We completely understand these concerns, but in our SGPT setting, they are totally unnecessary. All our coaches are highly skilled and trained in their ability to manipulate the training session based on the individuals in the session, meaning not all clients in the session will be doing the same thing.
This starts for us by knowing each of our members very well. We know who has a bad knee, who has a bad back, who wants to focus more on their legs, who wants to focus more on their core, who hates a particular exercise or who loves a particular exercise and wants to do more of it.
This gives us the ability to coach each client as an individual, and ensure we’re delivering a highly personalised service.
We truly believe the vast majority of people need very similar things when it comes to training. They need a well-rounded programme which is going to focus on strengthening the upper body, lower body and ‘core’. They need an element of cardiovascular training to improve their heart and lung health. They need exercises to aid flexibility and mobility, and they need exercises to work on any differences in strength on one side of the body to the other.
We’re able to deliver this to each and every member who steps through our doors in a way which is suitable for them.
Another large benefit to our small group personal training is the support, encouragement and camaraderie seen within our sessions, which you don’t get when training alone or with a 1-2-1 personal trainer, which has for many of our members meant that they actually enjoy their training sessions for the first time in their life.
There are also more subtle benefits to SGPT too – such as increased flexibility in timing of sessions (we offer sessions on the hour, every hour, from 6am – 7pm) and cost (our SGPT is around ¼ the price of our 1-2-1 personal training).
Before we finish, we’d just like to state that there are, of course, still times where 1-2-1 personal training is preferred, which is why we’ll also continue to provide this service. In the case of highly individualised goals, complex medical history or just in the case where someone just wants to be trained alone, 1-2-1 personal training may be the best option.
But for the vast majority of people, SGPT may be a suitable option when looking for ‘personal training’.
